Map of the State of Massachusetts Compiled From the Best Authorities (Carey's General Atlas 1795)
Carey, Mathew; Samuel Lewis; J. T. Scott (Engraver) 1795 Map Very Good; Engraved for Carey's American Edition of Guthrie's Geography improved by J.T. Scott. Map has one vertical fold, and is torn along most of that fold. Small chips and tears along top and bottom margins. Some minor light spotting. Provenance: Has receipt from famed Goodspeed's Bookshop. 1 pages. A very important map of Massachusetts by Mathew Carey, one of the seminal figures in early American Cartography. From Mathew Carey's American Atlas of 1795, which contained 21 maps, the first atlas printed in the United States. Following the Revolution, there was considerable activity in the United States by American mapmakers and publishers. Carey's was the first atlas devoted entirely to the new republic, then only a dozen years old. Printed in Philadelphia, Carey's atlas also represents the emergence of a native American cartography. At least ten of the maps were compiled and drafted by Samuel Lewis, and these represent Lewis's earliest cartographic works. Mathew Carey, an Irish immigrant, stands at the forefront of American cartography, for he established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm. In and around Philadelphia, Carey set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps, utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end. Carey is important, then, for setting the pattern of American map publishing. Not only was Carey's organization important, but his maps are some of the best issued around the turn of the century during the first decades of the United States. His maps wonderfully document the amazing development of the nascent nation, showing the political, social and economic development of the states and territories. Having access to the best information available on a timely basis, as well as using the best American craftsmen of the period, Carey's maps are shining examples of the high level of American cartography at the time. Carey's atlases were quite successful, establishing his firm as the preeminent American cartographic business by the end of the eighteenth century.
