1 Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pa. Original Signed Photograph by A. Aubrey Bodine

A. Aubrey Bodine (Photographer)
1954 A. Aubrey Bodine
Photograph Fine; An original photoprint by A. Aubrey Bodine. Photo is on a white mat. Printed on the bottom left is 'Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pa.' with Bodine's characteristic signature across at the right. The mat is rimmed by a basketweave design, and the print is in its original bamboo styled wooden frame. Although this campus dates back to 1812, its name was only changed to Lycoming in 1948. So this photo is probably from the early to mid 1950's. Actual photo area is 10.5 x 8 inches. A. Aubrey Bodine (1906 - 1970) was a photographer for the Baltimore Sun's Sunday Sun Magazine, also known as the brown section, for fifty years. Bodine is known for iconic images of Maryland landmarks and traditions. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. Bodine's books include My Maryland, Chesapeake Bay and Tidewater, Face of Maryland, Face of Virginia, and Guide to Baltimore and Annapolis. Bodine insisted on doing all of his darkroom work, using an extensive knowledge of techniques to modify photos. 'Choptank Oyster Dredgers' won first prize, as the best black and white picture in the 1949 Popular Photography contest which attracted 51,038 entries. The next year's contest drew 53,554 entries and Bodine's 'Early Morning Charge' won second prize. Bodine pictures are in permanent museum collections including: Smithsonian Institution, Center for Creative Photography, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Amon Carter Museum, Morris Museum, Peale Museum now the Maryland Historical Society, Mariners' Museum, Maritime Museum, George Eastman House Enoch Pratt Free Library, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, museums in Seattle, Detroit and Toronto, plus others. 21 x 11.5
