Caroline Ruutz-Rees, headmistress of Choate Rosemary Hall from 1890-1938, was a figure of extraordinary personality and influence, a militant feminist and suffragist of national prominence. On the Wallingford golf course she wore bloomers, which shocked the locals, and on buggy rides to Wallingford station she carried a pistol. She quickly changed Rosemary Hall's mission from domestic arts to that of a contemporary boys school. Under Ms. Ruutz-Rees' headship, the girls were introduced to a rigorous and challenging academic environment, a vigorous and demanding athletics program, and a student self-government program. Although the school's founder, Mrs. Choate, had originally intended to establish Rosemary Hall as an institution devoted to training girls in the domestic arts, Ms. Ruutz-Rees-drawing on her St. Andrew's education-created a school where young women would learn the same lessons as young men, on the same terms as young men. Ms. Ruutz-Rees vouched for her educational values in a classicist and disciplinarian way in the strictest sense as cited in Choate Rosemary Hall: A History of the School.
