Moderate general wear. 72 pages. Author Moses L Knapp (1799-1879) originated the 'perihelion scare,' agitators, pseudo-scientists, and fanatics are still prognosticating all sorts of evils as impending in consequence of the malign influence of the stars. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune reach their perihelion from 1880 to 1885. The authors propose that plagues, along with electric, magnetic and chemical changes will occur during these years. 'Extraordinary magnetic phenomena...which will manifest themselves in all their intensity when Jupiter is about 3 years from his perihelion - that is, in 1883.' The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) began in the afternoon of Sunday, August 26, 1883. The greatest volcanic earthquake and tsunamis ever known. In the year following the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, average Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures fell by as much as 1.2 °C (2.2 °F). Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) also believed 1880 to 1885 would be calamitous.
