'Almost all the collections, however, that we have seen, are nearly altogether, if not wholly, composed of those effusions of genius which adorned an earlier period of the literary history of our country. It has, on this account, been the object of the Editors of the Constellation, almost exclusively; to confine this Selection to passages from more recent writers, and to give the young reader, for whose use it is chiefly intended, such specimens of eloquent or interesting extracts, as may be .calculated both to excite his attention, and to form, and improve his taste; while they exhibit our language in all the beauty and energy of which it is susceptible'. Not for children, this collection sports entries like 'Conclusion of Mr. Burke's Speech previous to the Election at Bristol in 1780' and 'Dr. Buchanan's visit to the inquisition at Goa'.
