In vellum. The Life of the Martyr Saint Eustace, and The Cretideo by Gio. Baptista Manzini. Nice Firm Clean copy ! Light general wear. 141 + 299 pages. In the preface to his novel Il Cretideo, Manzini provided a tentative definition of the romanzo (novel) - the term for the genre that became accepted near the mid-seventeenth century - by attempting to distinguish it from the other genres with which it overlaps. He considers the genre 'called romanzo by the moderns,' as he puts it, the most difficult to practise; it is superior to history because of its association with epic poetry, and superior also to the noble epic poem because of its independence from Aristotelian rules. The romanzo is 'therefore the most astonishing and glorious construct that human ingenuity can devise'.
